The most important aspect of this element’s gameplay centers around the “cron” system, allowing a handler to denote one “ingress” (or data-in) stat and one “egress” (or data-out) stat. After this selection, the process of converting data from one stat to another (effectively allowing a handler to choose a stat to constantly buff, at the expense of any other stat) begins. ANY stat type can be chosen for both ingress and egress, giving a wide margin of flexibility in how a Data type pet can be played. As the creature’s Mental Level grows so does the “bandwidth” between ingress and egress stats, meaning that more of one stat is able to be converted into another! Paired with the ability for Data elements to “hack” ANY stat of an opponent, Data creatures are granted quite a few options in how to approach gameplay.

To help handlers figure out this (intentionally) complicated new element, here are a few ideas:

Default:

Ingress: 0 (Attack)

Egress: 7 (Fortitude)

Explanation: This setting converts the creature’s Fortitude stat into a buff for its Attack. Here’s the breakdown:

Activity on April 30th = 30 Glitch Flowers

Activity on April 29th = 29 Glitch Flowers

Activity on April 28th = 28 Glitch Flowers

…

Activity on April 12th = 12 Glitch Flowers

…

etc!

Have fun!

A Brief Note From The Developer:

Boy am I tired…

After spending a nearly non-stop week fixing our database server, then another week in crunch time designing and implementing this new Data element, I am feeling the burn. While it was tested to the best of my ability, I expect we may run into a few technical issues with the Data creatures for a little while as they’re adopted and experimented with. It’s the most logic-heavy type so far, and I’ve already had to spend a few hours fixing random stack-heap errors due to them being so memory hungry. There may be further issues as well over the coming weeks, but as bugs are found they’ll be promptly stomped on. Additionally, I already know that this element as-is will be found to be overpowered, underpowered, or sideways powered. Not *correctly* powered in this first pass to be sure. They’re just really weird little guys (which makes them awesome). Expect a few adjustments to the ingress/egress cron, new recovery_mode heal ability, and hack skills as they are balanced.

The one thing that I am sure of: they look cool as heck, right?

On that note, this new element is a slightly different development in how it’s implemented on the backend. You’ll notice that the sprites in the app are created differently than other elements, their textures and auras are completely different to any other type in how they function and display, and right now Data Souls can ONLY be bonded to Base coated unbondeds. These things are all related. Essentially, this is the first visually changing element type where instead of Krafties generating species-element texture sets for every single species and element combination (for those that change visually), it is instead using a blanket set of in-engine parameter changes to create its visual effect. In effect, it completely disregards the textures of the creature (meaning that coats have no meaning to a Data Soul), and overrides all of the visuals. With that, I had two options in terms of coats. Either limit Data Souls to ONLY be bondable to Base coated creatures, or OVERRIDE the coat of a creature to a “Data” coat when bonded. To get us started, I picked the safer option of blocking bonding unless it’s a Base coat, but if players would rather have the ability to bond the soul to anything and have the coat overridden I will consider changing that in the future.

If yall like this type of visual thing, I have a lot more ideas for further elements that can be similarly implemented. It saves a lot of texture work and gives visual effects that can’t be created with simple texturing, but does have the aforementioned tradeoff with the coat system. I’m interested to see how that will play out with the community.

Anyway, hope you all enjoy the new element, and I hope it somewhat makes up for that bout of downtime we had! I’m… going to sleep for a little while… Then I’ll probably come back to a few more reports on the Data element that need to be fixed… Then I’ll eat some cookies.

Have fun!

*beep boop buzz buzz click clack brrrrrrrrzt beep* Claim Glitch Flowers and Craft Data Souls Today!
